Deck Restoration in Prescott: Some Good Advice - Decktek Coating
It's that time of year in Prescott when we can enjoy the beauty of the outdoors from our deck. Right now, the best time is in the evening when we can watch a few thunderstorms roll in. What better way to enjoy those evenings is there, when we can relax on a deck that is well cared for. Decktek Coating in Prescott has a complete list of how to do it, and how to do it right
5 STEPS TO RESTORING YOUR DECK
BEFORE STARTING
Always hose down your deck first, before applying cleaners or strippers to the surface. The
water acts as a barrier to prevent any of these chemicals from penetrating too deeply into the
wood. It's only the surface you are cleaning. Product residue like bleach can and will shorten the
life of your deck.
APPLY CLEANERS
Using high concentrations of chlorine bleach (sodium hydroxide) is not the best method of
cleaning your deck. Yes it will kill mold and mildew and brighten the wood, but at the expense of damaging the fibers of the wood. Chlorine bleach will also change the natural color of the wood usually leaving it looking whiter and lacking natural colors. In most cases oxygenated bleach
(sodium percarbonate) is the best method and also safe for the environment. In some cases if
very heavy mold or mildew are present, chlorine bleach might be the answer. But for most
applications a mixture of 3 things works best. Oxygenated bleach to kill mold and mildew along
with brightening, dish detergent to clean, and water mixed in a bucket is the best cleaning
solution.
RINSE
Make sure all products are rinsed from deck surface and do not let any products dry before
rinsing. Leave all products on long enough to do their work and then rinse thoroughly. If plants
are present it's always best to water them down before washing off chemicals from the deck
surface. Oxygenated bleaches will not hurt plants but some strippers and chlorine bleach can.
APPLY BRIGHTENERS
By applying a brightener (oxalic acid) it will basically do three things.
1) Optimize the color of the wood.
2) Neutralize the wood and remove black or rust stains caused from nails. Neutralizing will also
bring the pH of the wood to around 7-9 which is important for good adhesion of sealers and stains.
3) Brighteners also open up the pores of the wood to accept the sealer or stain.
RINSE AGAIN
It is important after the final rinse that the wood be left to dry. We like to see no more than 15%
moisture content in the wood. At Decktek we use a moisture meter before applying product; so
to be safe, leaving your deck for at least 24 to 48 hours in good weather is recommended before
applying any type of top coat.
